UPDATE April 19, 2021 – President Joe Biden said he “listens to experts” like Dr. Fauci. That means Johnson & Johnson shots will resume in the United States on Friday, April 23.
Fauci has essentially ordered the resumption of J&J shots after the brief pause, despite the clear and present dangers. We’ve covered two J&J deaths and one severe adverse reaction since the announcement last week.
ATLANTA — Nine days ago, we wrote about the 15 million dose screw-up and disposal by Johnson & Johnson in Baltimore. We also talked about the billion-dollar settlements the company paid for its baby powder causing cancer. Last week, we wrote about three states halting J&J shots after numerous adverse reactions. That article posited that J&J is to the United States as AstraZeneca is to Europe. We repeated that theory two days ago. Now it has come to fruition.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers For Disease Control (CDC) released a joint statement this morning, calling for a pause in utilizing Johnson & Johnson shots in the United States. The agencies cited blood clots as the main reason for the pause. The J&J experimental viral vector shot is essentially the same product as the AstraZeneca experimental viral vector shot. Thus it is not surprising that the two products are causing the same adverse effects.
The joint statement reads in part:
CDC will convene a meeting of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) on Wednesday to further review these cases and assess their potential significance. FDA will review that analysis as it also investigates these cases. Until that process is complete, we are recommending a pause in the use of this vaccine out of an abundance of caution. This is important, in part, to ensure that the health care provider community is aware of the potential for these adverse events and can plan for proper recognition and management due to the unique treatment required with this type of blood clot.
Johnson & Johnson responded with its own news release.
“We are aware that thromboembolic events including those with thrombocytopenia have been reported with Covid-19 vaccines. At present, no clear causal relationship has been established between these rare events and the [Johnson & Johnson]-Janssen Covid-19 vaccine.”
The COVID Blog has chronicled at least three deaths and numerous severe adverse reactions to the J&J shot since it received emergency use authorization in the United States on February 27. This is a developing story. We will update by the end of this week.
